He may be a tour guide, but 18-year-old Jimah Ruland Umata is himself proving to be a big attraction at Rotorua's Tamaki Village.
"A lot of people are like "wow, ni de zhongwen tebie hao - your Chinese is especially good," Ruland Umata said.
"It's like they want to laugh but they're smiling at the same time. It's like they're in a moment of shock when they hear me speaking Chinese and it's such a great expression to see."

He's back in New Zealand now, but is brushing up on his Mandarin skills as part of the New Zealand Chinese Language Week, which commences today. When Angeline Tan started teaching Mandarin at an Auckland primary school three years ago, there were only about 80 students interested in learning one of the world's most popular languages.
Today, interest has swelled, with about 180 children learning, joining millions globally who are learning the language.
About twice a week for two hours, students from New Lynn's Arahoe School join Tan in discovering more about Chinese culture.
