About the Event

Calligratherapy - a meditative practice of Conscious Chinese Calligraphy to manage stress, restore mental balance and order.  Calligratherapy combines western psychologist Jung’s theory of optimal wellbeing with the philosophy of the ancient art of Chinese calligraphy to promote this state of calm presence in the world.  Anyone who observes the lively and precise to-and-fro movements in the air of a hand holding a brush, is struck by the impression of serenity and gentle concentration. Seeing a skilled calligrapher in action, we have a sudden yearning to enter into this world.  The effect of Chinese soft brush calligraphy practice is similar to that of relaxation training, which includes slower heart rate, decreased blood pressure and decelerated respiration. In addition, the Chinese character forms a perfect geometric square pattern incorporating such features as hole, linearity, symmetry, parallelism, connectivity and orientation, utilizing geometric and depth perception brain function. Plus the softness of the brush tip, the handwriting act involves a 3-D motion, which generates a powerful source of impact on the writer’s perceptual cognitive and physiological changes during its practice. As the practice went on, the calligrapher gained more control over their maneuvering of the brush, which in turn induced deeper inner calmness and physiological slow-down.
